What do I need to bring to my first lesson?

Kids arts first lesson packing checklist with gi, water bottle, gloves, and towel
Quick Answer

All your child really needs for their first kids martial arts lesson is comfortable clothing they can move freely in, a full water bottle, and a curious, open mind. Most schools supply any uniform or equipment needed for a trial class, so there’s no need to buy anything before you know it’s the right fit for your family.

After years of teaching martial arts, I’ve found that students don’t need much for their first lesson. Comfortable clothing, water, and a willingness to learn are usually enough, and coming in relaxed and ready to participate matters more than having every piece of gear on day one.

What to Wear

Loose, breathable athletic wear such as a t-shirt and shorts or track pants works well for a first class. Training is usually done barefoot, so shoes come off before stepping onto the mats. Long hair should be tied back, and it’s best to leave jewellery, watches, and anything with sharp edges at home to keep training safe.

What to Pack in Their Bag

A labelled water bottle helps your child stay hydrated between drills. A small hand towel is useful for wiping off sweat, and a spare t-shirt can be handy if training runs longer than expected. Keeping these items in one bag makes it easy to grab and go for future classes too.

What Not to Bring

Leave valuables, toys, and chewing gum at home, as they can be distracting or unsafe during active drills. Jewellery and watches should also stay off the mats to prevent injury to your child or their training partners. A clutter free bag helps them focus on the lesson ahead.

Getting Ready Mentally

It’s completely normal for kids to feel a little nervous before trying something new. Encourage your child to approach the class with curiosity rather than pressure to get everything right straight away. Every student starts as a beginner, and instructors are there to guide them through each step at their own pace. Learning about the benefits of kids martial arts can also help parents understand how training supports confidence, focus, discipline, and personal growth over time.

Arriving on Time

Plan to arrive around ten to fifteen minutes early so your child has time to settle in, meet the instructor, and complete any paperwork without feeling rushed. Arriving with a calm, unhurried start helps set a positive tone for the whole lesson.
